A aproximação entre Axl e o U2 começou poucos dias antes do encontro no palco.
O Guns n' Roses estava em turnê pela Europa e tinha um show marcado para a Irlanda, país do U2.
O U2 enviou uma caixa de uísque irlandês para o Guns n' Roses como um presente de boas-vindas.
Durante o show na Irlanda, Axl cantou um trecho de "One", do U2.
Daí para o convite para subir no palco do U2 foi um pulo.
